The Art Market

Posted in News on 17th November 2012

Irish Art is booming in the US while it disappoints in London.  The different viewpoints can be seen in terms of recent sales where a Francis Bacon painting sold for a staggering $29.7 million in New York while both Sotheby’s and Bonhams were disappointed with the fate of Irish paintings in their sales.  Only 17 of 26 Irish paintings sold in Sotheby’s with a Louis le Brocquy failing to meet the lower estimate while among the unsold lots in Bonhams were John Shinnors, Paul Henry, Louis le Brocquy and William Connor.  These names would have fetched high prices in Celtic Tiger times and one can only hope that they will do so once again when recessionary times are behind us.
